75 years of Indian democracy, Muslims in despair and fear

15 August 2022

As India celebrates 75 years of independence, the country's Muslims and other minorities are finding themselves under siege. India has been ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) since 2014.

India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi is steadily moving towards the right. He is openly and systematically supporting the Hindu majoritarian agenda. It has increased the frustration of Muslims. Socially they are getting cornered.

Critics say Hindu majoritarianism has become de facto state policy under Modi. The demand of the majority to declare the country as a 'Hindu state' is getting stronger day by day. Muslims across the country are being subjected to gross and subtle discrimination.

Various right-wing groups, state and private institutions supported by Modi's BJP continue to discriminate against Muslims. The constitutional right of Muslims to dress, place of worship, preach and practice religion—everything is being attacked, banned, crushed.

The rights of Muslims are shrinking. Since Modi came to power in 2014, the sword has come down on Muslims. For the first time in India's history, the ruling party has no Muslim representative in Parliament.

Author and journalist Dhirendra K Jha said, "If Hindu Rashtra means that Muslims are second-class citizens, then it has already worked in India."
